As the sun casts its golden glow over the picturesque shores of Juneau, Alaska, the anticipation is palpable. Having spent countless hours traversing the intricate waterways of the Inside Passage, we're ready to expand our horizons and set sail for new shores, embarking upon a journey that promises to ignite the spirit of exploration within each of us.
In May, we'll bid farewell to Juneau and chart a course northward, first stopping in the remote wilderness of Yakutat. Nestled between the rugged peaks of the St. Elias Mountains and the icy waters of the Gulf of Alaska, Yakutat offers a glimpse into the raw beauty of the Last Frontier. From there, we'll venture further west to Icy Bay, where towering glaciers spill into the sea and the silence is broken only by the crackle of calving ice.
Our next destination? The legendary Kayak Island, a place steeped in history and shrouded in mystery. It was here that Russian explorer Vitus Bering first set foot on Alaskan soil in 1741, and where remnants of ancient Aleut villages still dot the landscape. As we explore the island's rugged coastline and pristine beaches, we'll immerse ourselves in the rich tapestry of its past.
From Kayak Island, our journey takes us to the vibrant fishing community of Cordova, where the Copper River Delta meets the sparkling waters of Prince William Sound. Known as the "Gateway to the Copper River," Cordova is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts, offering world-class fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing opportunities.
As June unfolds, we'll explore the breathtaking beauty of Prince William Sound, where glaciers carve their mark into the rugged terrain, fjords beckon with their tranquil beauty, and hidden coves whisper tales of ancient mariners. From Cordova we head towards the bustling port town of Valdez, meanwhile spending our days exploring ancient glaciers, navigating through maze-like waterways, and soaking in the awe-inspiring scenery that surrounds us.
